David Gordon Green

well, i am late in the game. not sure how he slipped through the cracks. especially considering what a Malick nut i am. am a bit ashamed in fact. but just saw Undertow , which has affected me so much i feel quite incoherent. am now poised to watch everything made by this startling talent in as little time as possible. May have to revisit my 2000s top twenty accordingly.
thanks to oatsy for the heads up. so to speak

oh no she didn't

am afraid i did.

Described as "a modern throwback to the 'B” Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950's - 70's, mixing hot girls, fast cars, big guns" it is in fact just that. Absolutely execrable. maude and i loved it. turdy barked at the screen. i folded the laundry. when we host the summer maremma party ("Porn!") this should be playing somewhere in the unnoticeable background.

and there you have it. ran out of options. blew my wad. bit asia-centric. but then maybe that was to be expected. feel bad about not having a single teen crud, but to be fair 00s were not the strongest decade for my favourite genre. other notable exclusions eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and royal tenenbaum and ginger snaps and memento and probably a good deal more.

Ma nuit chez Maud

(the divine francoise fabian.. ahh)

what can one say, eric rohmer has passed away. i only found out this morning on the tube. i grew up watching rohmer. his style, so unforced and natural; dialogue-driven but never preachy and ranty; precious little plot but poignant and mordant slices of life. he was what film-making so often should be about but rarely is. he eschewed the flashy camera work (not that he wasn't capable of framing a perfect shot, he was) and let his tales unfold. You'd be hard pressed to say what his films are about. On the surface its your usual boy meets girl. But with a whimsy unique to him, he was able to explore the depths of human relationships with such a deft touch that you emerged from seeing one of his films feeling not only good about yourself but also intelligently made privy to a human secret.

i love country

tears, i tell you, tears

Your heart's on the loose
You rolled them seven's with nothing lose
And this ain't no place for the weary kind

You called all your shots
Shooting 8 ball at the corner truck stop
Somehow this don't feel like home anymore

And this ain't no place for the weary kind
And this ain't no place to lose your mind
And this ain't no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

Your body aches
Playing your guitar and sweating out the hate
The days and the nights all feel the same

Whiskey has been a thorn in your side
and it doesn't forget
the highway that calls for your heart inside

And this ain't no place for the weary kind
And this ain't no place to lose your mind
And this ain't no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

Your lovers won't kiss
It's too damn far from your fingertips
You are the man that ruined her world

Your heart's on the loose
You rolled them seven's with nothing lose
And this ain't no place for the weary kind

and here is my boy, jeff bridges

j, myself and carol toodled off to germany for a very long weekend for the baptism of baby lili, a beauty in a bonnet. we fussed, slobbered and sighed all over her.

more than once, j turned over to me, and in mock accusatory tone:
"where is our baby?"
