how did i miss this?
R.I.P.
by mere chance, leafing through Sight&Sound i saw a picture of Alida Valli in the Obit section. double take, stupour at seeing her there, almost as a footnote. oh no. another passes to the nether region. and there is no one left.
"The Italian film icon from the 1930s onwards, Alida Valli, who has died aged 84, was described by Benito Mussolini as the most beautiful woman in the world after Greta Garbo." (Guardian)
in the end she also wanted to be left alone:
"Don't bother, lasci perdere; it isn't worth it."
ah but it was.

Ah, sadness indeed. She played the great, tragic heroine in one of my all-time favourites, The Third Man. She was exquisitely good.
was reading how her hollywood career was for all intents and purposes sabotaged by putting her in some truly execrable films..
having said that i did thing paradine case was not half bad. not hitchcock's finest hour to be sure but still...
