contradictory

while i absolutely REFUSE to support italy in the world cup and it makes me FURIOUS when they win any match at all. i must say that i'm very proud of our men and women so far. although to be honest the blokes have yet to win a gold but i have faith. in the meantime (while i REFUSE to condone or watch these olympics), am most pleased to read about our victories in noble sports such as FENCING and SWIMMING, not silly ones like hair curling and BEACH VOLLEY. go go go!

Noble indeed old thing... Let's take it up in the countryside. I think we need new, improving pursuits.

I am taking huge pleasure from the major row that has just broken out following the ignoble last place awarded to "our" synchronised divers (what the fuck is synchronised diving doing in the Olympics?).

Apparently the 14 year old competitor -- now a media darling -- is simply not good enough, while his 20-odd year old, er, "partner" is being blamed for distracting the teenager by taking a mobile phone call from his mum during the competition. He in turn is blaming the 14 year old for not having competition nerves.

The respective coaches are now weighing in, and everything looks set fair for a major row.

Which will doubtless be far more entertaining than bloody synchronised diving.

Though at least the divers persist in wearing skimpy Speedos. Er... not that I care about the clothing of the 14 year old, obviously -- that would be too tacky even for me.

Next up: boiled eggs -- to be opened at the wide end or the narrow end?

Oh, And Another Thing -- not a single second of the Greco-Roman Wrestling is being televised in the UK. There's a proper, hard-core, original Olympic sport, one of the few, and we're pretending it doesn't even exist. Doubtless because "we" are not competing.

Who says the Olympics is all about noble sporting achievement rather than a nationalistic pursuit of war by other means?

not seen you go off on one on my blog for years! i think the last ranty rant was at the time of the top five best-ever buffy eps. feel compelled to catch up on this ``silly season'' olympic scrap forewith and also concur wholeheartedly on speedo endorsement. frankly the only olympics i'm into are leni riefenstahl's. where does that leave me? oh dear.

in the meantime. a random gem:
GENEVA, Aug 11, 2008 (AFP) - A giant inflatable dog turd by
American artist Paul McCarthy blew away from an exhibition in the
garden of a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a
greenhouse window before it landed again, the museum said Monday.
The art work, titled "Complex Shit", is the size of a house. The
wind carried it 200 metres (yards) from the Paul Klee Centre in
Berne before it fell back to Earth in the grounds of a children's
home, said museum director Juri Steiner.
The inflatable turd broke the window at the children's home when
it blew away on the night of July 31, Steiner said. The art work has
a safety system which normally makes it deflate when there is a
storm, but this did not work when it blew away.
Steiner said McCarthy had not yet been contacted and the museum
was not sure if "Complex Shit" would be put back on display.

How spooky -- I was just reading that same story because the Guardian website has the awe-inspiringly brilliant headline of:

GIANT TURD WREAKS MUSEUM HAVOC:
Inflatable dog mess art work blown from moorings and brings down power line in Switzerland.

That has to be the best headline ever, doesn't it?

& yes swimming is a noble sport, which can become nasty if you get to swim with the fishes.

Since when synchronised diving is a male sport?
Let's bring back the lions... Those were olympics
