someone leave the light on...

not to be outdone by the japanese. the koreans, GOD BLESS, have developed a real talent for the psychological horror (dubbed K-horror). not since the shining has western cinema be able to produce something that is chilling. frightening. mysterious. troubling. encrypted. moving. tragic. and well, you know, the rest. so the ball is firmly in the court of the east (leaving hollywood to take the scraps and remake them, well or not). well after being thoroughly impressed with the tale of two sisters i didn't pursue other crackers. now i have. a bit more.
I LIKE.

Having watched way too many cockney gangster flicks, I like to imagine that I am "a bit tasty", as they would say (ie, that I'm "hard". And no, I don't mean that sexually).

Although, truth be told, I'm more like that fat crime boss confronted by Michael Caine's gangster in "Get Carter", to whom he reasonably said "Now you're a big bloke, but you're outta shape..." before proceeding to beat the daylights out of him.

Anyway, back to me thinking I was dead hard. Then I watched the DVD extras of Korean flick Oldboy, in which the actor was recorded eating no fewer than three live octopi in rapid succession, images which just won't leave my head as each octopus curled its tentacles around his face in a desperate attempt to escape his ravening jaws. I felt ill. I haven't been able to watch a Korean film since (and I know that's absurd).

So, is this the one that will break the block for me?

PS: Get Carter has a fantastic opening sequence in which massively powerful Class 55 Deltics haul gorgeous Mk2b InterCity stock on the London-Newcastle express up the East Coast Mainline. We see Caine having dinner in the restaurant car and everything. Later in the film you can see a Class 27 (I think) hauling some coal wagons, and a wee Class 101 DMU. It's a great movie for train buffs...

mmm answer this though. octupus aside, how did you feel about old boy?

i personally thought it a stunning masterpiece the likes of which i have not seen in a long time so i am biased. and those extras with the octupus, made me kind of peckish...

mmmm....
hard to say if i would recommend you to venture. part of me is tempted to say no. firstly because cute korean girls in high school uniforms are unlikely to do anything for you.

ultimately and i have to watch it again (it has many twist and turns and different time sequels and needs to be deciphered) it's a ghost story. it's a love story.
and a social indictment.

did you like the ring? did you like battle royale...then go forth...and let's face it. they are so androgynous it could work for you too.

mmm i think i got a bout of yellow fever my friend.

Yeah, if it weren't for the cruelty to octopi I would have said it was a very good film. And I fell in lust with the criminal mastermind, too...
