i like my westerns like my men

big and bad
jest aside...i really like me a good western
and this remake, is a real keeper.

the genre is going through something of a revival of late
(though this has been said before and usually they are one offs)

i guess the key thing about a good western is that there is no
place for trite revisionism or glib political correctness.
you have to stick to the basics. and the archetypes
which doesn't mean it has to be a saddle 'em up, shoot 'em down
there is room for complexity (a good western can say it all about
the human condition) but the golden rule is: don't take too many
liberties. this one doesn't and it is all the better for it.

Totally, completely agree. This is a Western for the 21st century, which embraces the long glorious history of the genre but gives us a more modern, "knowing" approach that makes it feel fresh.

Loved this film.

Loved the leads, too (even creepy Russell Crowe who, damn him, every so often turns in a performance that makes me warm to him. As here, or in The Insider).

oh duc. if we were in the same city
dare i say it, we would never leave your basement flat in west london.

i found myself absolutely mesmerized by crowe. he really is the finest of actors. and i've take issue with him in the past. but nothing can detract from this performance. i love the burly fella.
